Ekain cave is located in the municipal areas of Zestoa and Deba. It is known for its cave paintings from the Upper Palaeolithic period and more specifically for horse images that are present in the cave. Rafael Rezabal and Andoni Albizuri, members of Antxieta cultural association of Azpeitia discovered the cave in 1969. J. M. de Barandiaran and Albizuri himself dealt with the excavation works. UNESCO declared the cave as a World Heritage Site in 2008, along with the Santimamiñe and Altxerri Caves.
Ekain is currently closed to public; instead, you can visit a replica located in the Ekainberri museum that has an exact copy of the paintings.
